Description

System’s software solution consists of management software and of simulation software. The parameters of the system for a specific site will be inserted into simulation software that creates system design for the site. The same design-solution will be used for easy installation as well as for the management of the installed system.
 
Such architecture allows flexibility and stability of the system:
 - The intelligence is distributed over the system and failure of one controller does not compromise the system;
 - The integration of microcontrollers with terminal devices allows the devices to fulfil different functions and applications e.g. movement sensor is functioning as a part of the security system but it also identifies persons for switching on/off the HVAC systems and lighting;
 - Each microcontroller has an individual network ID and, therefore the potential technical failure can be quickly identified and the non-functional device replaced;
 - The system can be installed with terminal devices of different manufacturers;
 - The simulation system allows cost-efficient design of site-specific solutions;
 - Plug&play functionality – standardized microcontrollers with individual network ID’s allow cost-efficient installation of the system. Installation does not require specialist engineering knowledge.
 
Unlike existing energy management systems, Mirovar’s system is easy-to-install and easy-to-use. In cooperation with the Energy Efficient Building Core Laboratory of Tartu University, Mirovar has studied the potential of the technology for energy saving. According to the simulation performed, it is estimated to amount to 23-28% of the current energy consumption. Such saving offers potential users a payback period of 3-4 years on their investment.
 
In addition to energy savings, on the next development stages the system can provide users of office buildings with convenience features, based on personal profiles.

Advantages

The traditional building control systems have a centralised architecture, i.e. the whole information exchange takes place through a central controller that analyses the input information and communicates orders to the actuator. The technical solution of Mirovar is based on controllers and specifically designed microcontrollers, so the “intelligence” of the actuator is placed in the close proximity or within.
The main advantages of the system are:
·         The system’s architecture allows cheap design, installation and maintenance, and therefore gives an investment payback period of 3-4 years.
·         The system is easy-to-install, no specialist knowledge is required for installation.
·         The system is easy-to-manage, the users of office buildings do not have to change their everyday behaviour.
·         The systems investment for customers is 20 Euros per square meter and is projected to decrease within five years to 12 Euros per square meter. Such amount of investment is several times smaller than for most other energy-saving technologies, for example for building a passive building.

Innovative aspects (ecologic, social and economic)

Environmental Aspects
According to the Green Book of the European Union, energy consumption makes up about 78% of all greenhouse gases emitted to the environment. Mirovar’s technology allows decreasing energy consumption of buildings by 23-28%. In fifth year after the start of providing Mirovar’s system on the market, the annual energy savings of buildings using Mirovar’s technology would be from 57 GWh to 95 GWh per year.
Social Aspects
Mirovar´s technology has direct impact on work environment enhancing the comfort and security of the people occupying the buildings. The technology under development:
 - Ensures a stable and comfortable atmosphere in the room (air humidity, temperature, etc) by switching on the necessary devices at the required moment.
 - Makes it possible to establish a comprehensive homogeneous control system for the users of the building (recording of working time, security and access rules, etc).

Application examples

Examples of application of the technology:
Control of energy consumption – it reduces the energy consumption in a building. For example, when employees leave the room, the system automatically switches off the lights, computers, printers and other items of IT hardware and at night-time also heating devices, etc.
Ensuring comfort of rooms (stability of the indoor climate) - it constantly ensures a stable and comfortable atmosphere in the room (air humidity, temperature, etc) by switching on the necessary devices at the required moment.
Access barrier – it makes it possible to establish a comprehensive uniform control system for the users of the building (recording of working time, security and access rules, etc).
Collection of data for analysis of human behaviour models (e.g. analysis of working time) – the installed sensors allow collecting data of statistical nature from the environment and developing miscellaneous applications on the basis thereof.

Cost

The total installation cost of Mirovar’s Energy Management System is about 20 Euros per square meter and is projected to decrease within five years to 12 Euros per square meter. The achieved energy saving gives owners / users of the building a payback period of 3-4 years.
