Membrane bioreactor technology (MBR) can ensure effluent-free production even in the fish-farming sector. This innovative waste-water recycling technology allows fish to be raised for everyday consumption anywhere in the world without waste water. This technology was pioneered at the first waste-water-free fish farm in Germany.
The break-through development marks the beginning of a new era in environmental and water conservation. It is now possible to raise fish without using large amounts of drinking water and without the need for any kind of waste disposal. In addition, the use of MBR technology ensures a very high water quality in the fish-farming basins and therefore gives the fish much better living conditions than a conventional system can provide. The use of antibiotics for fish health reasons is no longer necessary when a fish farm uses a waste water recycling system with MBR.

Innovative aspects (ecologic, social and economic)

The technique allows fish farms at any place even if there is no connection to a river or lake available. Use of antibiotics becomes unnecessary. System sizes can be adapted to the water volumes the customer needs to treat. Drastically reduces drinking water consumption during the purifying process. No waste water spoils rivers, lakes, the soil or the sea.

Application examples


The investment costs depend on the size and capacity of the system and start at 50.000 Euro. Operating costs of systems making use of the new innovative technology are comparable to operating costs for conventional systems.
