Description

The oil and water are separated, and the collected oil can be reused. The biosurfactant washing solution can be applied up to 10 times and biodegrades easily into a common natural compound. The residual oil that remains bound in the soil then is treated with specially selected microorganisms to lower the contamination concentrations to a level appropriate for phytoremediation. In total, the process takes about one year, depending upon the severity of the contamination and the location. Location is an important factor because the bacteria used in the process lie dormant in cold temperatures but resume activity as the temperature rises.

The developed technology can be applied to soil contaminated by any concentration of oil or oil products. Biodegradation alone usually is effective in 20 to 50 g/kg of pollution, and sometimes up to 100 g/kg; however, the combination of technologies used by Biocentras manages to clean soil containing up to 300 g/kg of oil sludge.
