Description

In 2010, the company installed an energy-efficient ladle heating station whose core element consists of a novel porous burner for heating of the transport ladles. Combustion no longer requires an open flame. By means of infrared radiation and convection, the combustion heat is transferred to radiant tubes adapted to the ladles, enabling a direct and uniform control of ladle heating.
The useful economic life of the ladles can be extended owing to reduced thermal stress on the refractory lining. Exhaust gases are collected now, and the waste heat will be used for secondary applications in the future. The innovative heating technique was developed by Promeos GmbH, Erlangen (www.promeos.com).
Owing to the application of the novel burner technology, the company is able to save about 61,400 m³ of natural gas per year, corresponding to ca. 60 per cent of the primary energy used, and thus, 113.8 tons of CO2 equivalents.

Advantages

Natural gas savings: 61.400 m³/a
CO2 emission mitigation: 113.8 t/a

Innovative aspects (ecologic, social and economic)

Based on the reduced cleaning and delivery times of the ladles, Schmees achieved a considerable increase in process productivity. The heat radiating from the ladles could be reduced by 75 per cent, resulting in less failure of the ladle transmission system. Also noise levels decreased significantly. Altogether, the working conditions in the hall could be improved considerably.

Prior to implementation of the measure, EFA provided PIUS Financing consultancy to the company. As a result, Schmees applied for funding from the Environmental Innovation Programme of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz und Reaktorsicherheit – BMU). The company received guidance by EFA during the application phase and after approval of a financial contribution by the German Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW). Thus, based on a measuring programme, EFA, jointly with Schmees, summarized the results in a final report. The project was supported by the Environmental Innovation Programme of the Ministry for the Environment with funds amounting to 54,273 Euros.Schmees invested ca. 190,000 Euros into the new technology.
