Description

An Opcon Powerbox is an ORC installation positioned in a flow of surplus energy. ORC stands for Organic Rankine Cycle. Rankine is a temperature scale invented by William John Macquorn Rankine in 1859.
An ORC installation is based on the basic principle of the Rankine cycle. The theoretical level of efficiency is controlled by the temperature difference between hot and cold media.
The decisive factor for Opcon Powerbox is an extremely reliable SRM turbine, developed by Opcon’s Svenska Rotor Maskiner, SRM; a world leader in compressor technology.

Advantages

Advantages of Opcon’s ORC system:
  • Electricity from surplus energy (waste heat) from waste water at a temperature range of 50-95°
  • No emissions, no environmental downside
  • Production costs for electricity are competitive, making the technology profitable at even lower electricity prices than those now valid

Innovative aspects (ecologic, social and economic)

Environmental Aspects
- An average Opcon Powerbox generates 3 400 MWh of electricity per year
- 3 400 MWh = 340 cubic metres of oil = 2,100 barrels of oil
- A coal-fired condensing power plant emits around 3,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide when
generating the same amount of electricity as an average Opcon Powerbox, which causes zero
emissions
- Electricity from an average Opcon Powerbox is sufficient to heat around 300 normal homes
- An average Opcon Powerbox produces the same amount of electricity as the largest wind
turbine

Demand is increasing for alternative energy production, driven by two trends: the long-term increase in fossil fuel and electricity prices, and the rapidly-growing requirements for effective measures to limit resource wastage and environmentally-harmful operations that contribute to global warming.

Producing electricity with Opcon Powerbox from waste heat that would otherwise not be used creates major energy savings, with the electricity also adding significant value to the supply chain.  

Opcon’s investment in this field is its largest ever in organic growth based on proprietary technology. The market is global with a theoretical potential in the billions for the Swedish market alone.
